Approximately 85% of the County Forest is forested. Upland timber types include mixed hardwood (hard maple, soft maple, white & yellow birch, ash, basswood), aspen, oak, balsam fir, white pine, red pine, jack pine, spruce and hemlock. Forested lowland consists of fir, spruce, lowland hardwoods, tamarack and cedar.
Two timber sales are conducted each year. The Spring sale generally takes place in early June and the Fall sale in early November. Between 18 & 25 tracts totaling nearly 2,500 acres are sold at each sale.
The Iron County Forest is 3rd party certified sponsored through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
